What will you be reading in 2018?

I read a great deal. Articles, news stories, periodicals, newsletters, and blogs are the methods of my learning and the fodder for my own blog posts. I also read books. I try to read a variety of books, not just business or HR books. I am of the school of thought that the more widely read you are the “wiser” you can become. I read a variety of fiction books. I started off by reading Dan Brown’s new novel about Robert Langdon called Origin. I am currently making my way through the twenty or so Patrick O’Brian seafaring novels about Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin, set in the early 19th century. Believe it or not, I learn a lot about interpersonal conflict, leadership, trust, and more from these novels. I also read biographies. As you can see in my picture I have a Leonardo da Vinci and a James Madison biography.
In that stack are also business books, such as:

  • Radical Candor by Kim Scott (finished 2017 with that one and I will be incorporating some of her ideas into some training I am doing)
  • The Cilantro Diaries by Lorenzo Gomez III
  • The Power of Little Ideas by David Robertson
  • 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace by Gary Chapman and Paul White

HR related books include:

  • Recruiting in the Age of Googlization by Ira S. Wolfe
  • HR on Purpose by Steve Browne

Futurist reading:

  • The Inevitable by Kevin Kelly

Science reading:

  • Diversity and Complexity by Scott E. Page (I wanted more than an HR definition)

Quirky reading:

  • When the Earth was Flat by Graeme Donald

This list is not what I will finish with, more will be added as the year goes by.
Not bragging
This is not intended to be a brag list. I am a curious person. I am interested in people, places and things. I think by being interested I also become more interesting. I can offer more to my clients, my friends and family, and to you, my readers. I think reading makes me better at my business. I become a better resource. I think reading will also make you better at what you do. But don’t be a narrow reader. Be widely read. Modeling the habits of successful people is not a bad way to start 2018.
