From the Archives- Future Friday: Five Future Facts You Need to Know

Facts you should be aware of.
Facts you should be aware of.

I am on vacation therefore I have reached back into the archives to bring you an interesting post with important information. This was originally posted on May 23, 2014.
Here are some interesting projections into the future that I ran across. Some of these are projections for the year 2030. The year 2030 is a mere 16 years away. I will guess that most of you reading this may still be in your HR career with yet a long way to go. Despite the fact that I am older than almost all of you I may very well still be writing about HR. So you need to pay attention.

Future Fact #1

You think you have issues with older workers in the workplace now? Well guess what it never goes away. People continue to age. In the year 2050 it will be a big issue with 32% of workers in the developed world being in the 60+ age range. The difference between then and now will be medical advancements that will make those 60 years more “alive” and thus staying in their jobs even longer than current baby boomers. By the way in developing countries 20% of their workforce will be in that age category.

Future Fact #2

Non-traditional work will become a much bigger issue. By 2025 (just 11 years away) 45% of the U.S. workforce will be employed in contingent jobs, up from 30% today. Are you adjusting to this? Are you giving thought how you, as both company and individual, will be affected by this? Check out my post from on this subject, Future Friday: Time-sharing employees.

Future Fact #3

You may have been reading about the importance of “mobile” in reaching employees, candidates, consumers, etc. Today that penetration is only about 0.1% today. By the year 2030 it will be 65%. You had better be thinking about, and working with your IT, in order to be ready. It will be happening on a big level starting SOON.

Future Fact #4

Things are going to have to change by 2030 as far as visa’s go. By 2030 China, India and Brazil will become the leading exporters of qualified talent. Do you have your Chinese and Portuguese language lessons in place?  您需要

Future Fact #5

Currently 80% of the world’s wealth resides in the Western World. By 2050 that will have reversed dramatically to only 35% in the Western world and 65% in the East. There will be a very large increase in the “middle class” and 2/3 of them will live in Asia. What impact will this have on lifestyle and compensation in the West?
These are the kinds of things that truly strategic HR professionals need to be considering today both on a global basis but also on a local basis. How will these things affect your company? Don’t care because you will be gone, well then think about your personal situation.
No more excuses that you did not know!
