While many workers may think a healthy work-life balance is unattainable, we don’t. Here’s how you can make it work.

In order to create a work-life balance that works for you, you’ve got to let go of the notion that you’re always busy. Sure, it may seem like the workforce is working more than ever before and it might feel like we’re all overworked. According to data reported by The Atlantic, work hours are actually down and we have more leisure time than ever before. But yet, for some reason we feel like we have no time to do things we love. Being busy is a myth. We love to let ourselves think that we are busy. Sure, we might have 10 shows to catch up on, seven books we want to read, countless errands to run and a handful of social commitments, not to mention those work-related deadlines, but despite the laundry list of to-dos, we do have time. And we aren’t that busy. Cut out the noise from your life and take part in what truly matters to you, busy or not. Only then you will start to see a healthy work-life balance unfold.

Switch Things Up

It’s easy to get caught up in the business-driven, promotion-rewarding world of the corporate world. And sure, there’s nothing wrong with hanging around at a company in hopes of earning a promotion or bonus. However, if you’re finding that you’re unhappy on a daily basis and work is becoming a chore, it may be time to look elsewhere for work, as this can directly impact your outside life. Consider looking to a company that shares similar values and promotes open communication. There’s plenty of new job opportunities online waiting to be discovered.

Strike Out on Your Own

Have you always dreamed about being your own boss? Is the standard 9-to-5 working hours not working for you? You might want to consider a freelancing gig. Freelancing is a great way to test the waters to determine if being in business for yourself is a smart move. It’s important to make time for yourself. No matter what your interests are, from yoga or painting or mountain biking or restoring old cars, having a hobby is one of the best ways to balance your work and your outside life. Spending a little time alone working on a hobby is also good for your mental health. According to the experts from the website Psychology Today, a little solitude goes a long way. In fact, spending time alone gives your brain time to unwind and reboot, solitude is even said to improve concentration and productivity. During this time you can think through problems and think deeply without distraction — something more of us should do more often.
