The term “abusive boss” can cover a lot of different things. Most of us probably think in terms of sexual harassment or discrimination. If this is the case we know that an employee can file a case with the EEOC. But what about other situations? What about a situation where violence is threatened? The answer may surprise you because, as it turns out, being an abusive boss can get your fined by OSHA.
The case
In a February 6, 2013 news release OSHA announced that they are suing a company in Florida because the boss’ behavior led an employee to believe a possibility of workplace violence existed. The employee confronted the boss with their concern and apparently the boss did not take too kindly to it. The employee then filed a retaliation complaint. Well that displeased the boss even more and when he received the complaint of retaliation the boss then cut off access to the computers for this employee and promptly fired them.
That course of action did not sit well with OSHA. As Teresa Harrison, OSHA’s acting regional administrator in Atlanta said “Employees have the right to raise workplace violence concerns without fear of retaliation. OSHA will continue to enforce the whistleblower provisions of the OSH Act to protect employees who report violations.”
The mistakes and the remedy
The boss made a several mistakes.

  1. First, he was being an abusive jerk and that is bad management. He was making himself a perceived safety hazard.
  2. He reacted by retaliating against the employee by cutting off access to the computer system not allowing the person to perform their job.
  3. Then he terminated the person’s employment for complaining about a safety hazard. That is directly a violation of the OSH Act.

OSHA is suing the company for back wages, interest, and compensatory and punitive damages, as well as front pay in lieu of reinstatement. Additionally, it seeks to have the employee’s personnel records expunged with respect to the matters at issue in this case and to bar the employer against future violations of the OSH Act. He had better mind himself in the future, because if he is truly an abusive boss other employees now know that they have some recourse to deal with the situation as well.
The police power of OSHA
As I reported on March 19, 2013 in OSHA and the Affordable Care Act: What is that connection? OSHA is responsible for investigating and punishing retaliation for 22 different statutes. They will investigate such things as:

  • Firing or laying off
  • Blacklisting
  • Demoting
  • Denying overtime or promotion
  • Disciplining
  • Denial of benefits
  • Failure to hire or rehire
  • Intimidation
  • Making threats
  • Reassignment affecting prospects for promotion
  • Reducing pay or hours

The summary of the program reads:

OSHA’s Whistleblower Protection Program enforces the whistleblower provisions of more than twenty whistleblower statutes protecting employees who report violations of various workplace safety, airline, commercial motor carrier, consumer product, environmental, financial reform, food safety, health insurance reform, motor vehicle safety, nuclear, pipeline, public transportation agency, railroad, maritime, and securities laws. Rights afforded by these whistleblower acts include, but are not limited to, worker participation in safety and health activities, reporting a work related injury, illness or fatality, or reporting a violation of the statutes.

What you can do
This points out how important proper knowledge of good management practices is and making supervisors and managers how critical their behavior is to the success of the company. Understanding how their behavior can get the company in hot water is an important training step.

  1. Was the case settled outside of court or did the person win the lawsuit? Or is it still ongoing? I didn’t see it mentioned in the article. It will be interesting to see how it plays out if the case goes through the full legal process rather than being settled outside of court.

  2. When your Supervisor/Office Manager continues to downgrade and have outburts (of which she denies and says I’m lying) then what are my options. I live in a small town where work is hard to come by so I took this position (Secretary) in hopes of moving up some day. She has stooped as low as to inform me that I will never be moved from this position as long as I’m here. I worked with the Company doing Medical Billing several years before Economy took a dive and that part of the Company was closed so I was laid off. When the Secretary quit they called me back and I accepted with hopes of moving up some day but with no one backing me and continuing to make abusive remarks to me I see it will never be. I’m not allowed to discuss anything within the Company to no one but her. We have four Partners that own the Business and one is her very close friend. If there’s any advice you can give me I would appreciate it. I go home crying, I cry prior to going to work..all because of this mean and very unprofessional Manager. She has even talked down at me in front of Clients and I have to apologize for her behavior. This is just getting too much. I run the whole front which includes answering the phone alone for 16 plus employess due to them hiring more Accountants and Bookkeepers. I assemble all Returns, Review all with every Client, accept all payments other than Credit Cards of which I’m not allowed to take, Assist majority of the Clients with their questions and yet I’m NOT Doing Enough. My workload has increased by about 40% and she expects me to be a speed demon. I get fussed at for not following up with all the Clients of completed Returns in a Timely manner but how is it possible I ask when I’m the only one to answer ALL incoming calls. I cannot get her to understand this. I feel she wants me to quit but I really need my job. She came at me 3 times yesterday to Fuss & tell me She Know’s I Don’t Like Her & She Feels the Same way but we’ve got to make it work…I just want to know how to make something work that she doomed from the time of my hire.

    • Dawn, that is a miserable situation to be in and I feel for you. Unfortunately, under Federal law anyway, being a bully is not illegal. And she is a bully. Pay attention to what she says, if she starts making reference to your age, gender, race, etc. then you might have a basis of complaint under EEOC. I would encourage you to find a different job as best you can if you feel you have no opportunity to correct this by talking to the partners. Any co-workers willing to back you up?

I’m a formen at a contruction site and the superviser lately is being a real jerk by saking me if I’m using drugs he threatened me if the building wouldn’t pass inspection last Thursday re was going to fire me on Friday he asked me if i was drinking because i smells like alcohol i don’t work on saturday but i was going to come in just to help he said if I’m late that on monday i was giing to be fired and i don’t even get pay to come in on saturday is that ilegal what he’s doing? Can he or the company be sued?

    • Oscar, he is definitely being a jerk, but unfortunately being a jerk is not illegal. If he were making these threats based on your race, or age, or ethnicity they you might have a case for harassment. If you have access to a human resources department it might be good to talk to them. Good luck on working with this guy.

  4. Kirstie Carrier writes me up for sending her an inbox message on FB. she said she never read it or anything. But later I realized this was her opportunity to get my signature on a write-up paper. She quickly stuffed that paper into her desk drawer where she said nobody will see it. Then dismissed me to return to work. I did return to work.
    Recently at Cash Magic Lake Charles, where I had been working since 8/5/2014. I was written up for mentioning to my assistant manager something about me sending a picture of the accident in front of the Casino. She immediately wanted to write me up over it. But yet she’s corresponding and also is friends with many others that work there. Kirstie Carrier is my manager that then after she writes a little short line at the top. I sat and took instruction and in the future not message her on Facebook. She took that singed write-up then forged the rest of it in the printer and added so much more frivolous junk to it that it makes it look like I’m a careless employee. Untruths that never occurred were on there. I beg someone over there please this was no fault t of my own extreme wrongful bullying me from the Manager in the workplace. I’m sure they think I’m stupid because I was in LD as a child; but that just means I learn differently. I noticed on the schedule I was setup for 4 days off. I pretended to be happy about the 4 days off. I was also very suspicious and 2 days at night called the front desk security Veronica. She explained that earlier she saw I’m supposed to be at work on the 3rd and 4th days. It was a clear setup for a no/call no/show which is termination grounds. I panicked and arrived at work 24 hours before i would have been scheduled for. I spoke with Dane (the general manager) and he said that yes i was fired. I have also recorded the firing interview with my phone. As I was a participating speaker being recorded. I just want my job back and I have loyal customers wanting to sign petitions and contacting me wanting to either go where I go. I need a rep from wrongful termination & labor board to arrive unannounced and collect all my personnel papers especially the write-ups. I’m sure something else can be done. I’ve asked 3 or more times in the past that Kirstie Carrier stop bullying me or I’ll take it up with someone who can fix it. Such as the sole owner Jeffery Jacobs (CO).

      A lot of things are possible, but in this particular case that would be retaliation and that is definitely illegal. I would encourage you to go to HR and complain about your original complaint and the fact that you boss has threatened to fire you for filing a complaint.

  5. Im a barber and work for a man who be littles me and screams at me in front of clients which is starting to give me anxiety!. He verbally abuses me on a daily basis by flying off the handle if i have questions concerns, or even speak to him on how he has been making me feel. He starts screaming more at me told me he can do whatever he wants and if i dont like i can get the f*** out. I come home shaking cause of the feeling he gives me when i leave that place. I have brought him a lot of buisness and work as much as I can. He will not give me a key so he does not show up to open the shop and i am sitting in the parking lot til half hour after he shows up, meanwhile customers are coming and leaving cause they do not want to wait. He has to go to the doctor for a procedure and instead of leaving a key or opening the shop I am forced to take the day which i will be losing money on that day. I really have no idea if this is legal or what i should do cause i do not feel comfortable working for a man like this. He can never keep employees for long because of the way he is. Today its hard to find work. Im stuck and need advise on what I should do.

    • Hey Krista:
      I am sorry to hear about your situation, but unfortunately the small business owner you work for is just a bad manager and owner. On a Federal level there is no protection, the company is not covered by federal law until it reaches 15 employees. There may be some state law, depending on where you are located, that might offer some protection, but even that is unlikely. I realize changing jobs is tough, but I suggest you remove yourself. Find out where the customers go when they can come to your shop and go apply there. Don’t allow yourself to continue to be a victim.

  6. My boss is a woman she is also the president and she is also HR. She’s smart and from what I see a compassionate person except her compassion stops at my door. Her remarks to me I would expect from a bully and inappropriate.
    I love my work I enjoy my work but I don’t enjoy the Hot Shots she likes to take at me.
    I seem to have been singled out. I do my best to avoid her but my gut feeling is that she wants me gone.
    I’ve been at this company for 15 years and I’m over 50 years old and would prefer not to get a new job since I enjoy what I do. Do you have any words of wisdom for me?

    • Ms. Johnson, rather than avoiding her why not sit down with her and let her know that she “hurts” you with her comments. Being miserable is not the way to go through your work life, when a conversation might clear it up. Just a suggestion.

  7. I am an office administrator. I have been employed for 10 yrs. In one occasion while i was on vacation my boss asked one of the employees to go through my stuff on my desk and make copies of all office passwords which he already had. Later on implying that i was stealing from the company. Being that he didn’t fine anything he didn’t approach me. But left a awfully thought to the staff that i supervise. Than he got sick and made changes to everyone’s hours by cutting a day out to each and cutting a 20% of my salary. And expected me to do their job while i had already a plate full. Than after 3 weeks he adjusted everybody’s schedule back to full-time and kept me with my pay cut. Is this behavior considers my boss to be an abusive boss? Is there anything you advice… thank you.

  8. Ok so I work for a boss for over 10 years. I wanted to be promoted to salesmen since I know the ins and outs of the company. So when I ask him about the position he tells me ” this is a good ole boy scene. Considering I’m Hispanic . The other thing is I’m on salary just like any other office personal . Well I asked to take vacation and he said he’s not paying for my vacation but yet everyone else gets paid vacation?? There’s a list of things that goes on and over looked what can I do?

  9. I’ve been working to this company for almost 3 years. The boss is very bad in communication with the employees. She doesn’t give any health benefits for full time employees and she always ask me to do office and personal errands for her. Sometimes it takes me the whole day outside doing things for her. She said it’s ok because she pays for my mileage. She pay late for everyone. She hires people who is undocumented and pay them cash and pay them after a week of their payday. Bottom line, she does illegal stuff and asked us to take down the whistleblower that’s on the wall. She has 2 employee in the office and the rest is caregivers. It was me and the other girl in the office and we decided to leave the company. I gave my boss my resignation letter and gave her 2 months to get a replacement and my other co-worker just resigned right away. Because of her ego she send me a termination letter and a cease and decease letter. Now she is spreading lies to everyone that my coworker and I were stealing money from her that’s why she couldn’t pay them on time. And she is texting and threatening me like if she’s innocent. Can you please advise me what to do with this. Do I have to just sit and do nothing?

  10. Our Administrative Manager is also doing billing for our company, billing is not doing good and no money is coming in for the company. Our Director decided to hire another billing company to handle the business but our A.M/ billing threatened our director and informed him she will sue him for damages , health hazards etc, he even threatened us that if the directors decides to hand the business to new billing 6 people will be fired out including myself(im not even part of billing) . We cannot file a complaint to HR because HR is also afraid of her and this Admin manager/billing holds our HR’s neck. She fired 4 people already. If employees doesn’t agree with her she fires them out. All of us now are afraid and cannot do anything since this is the only bread and butter. Advice please

  11. Thursday I was brought into the my supervisors office after 2 hours of work. Before I can sit down she says she has to let me go, because I had 8 ROA’S. usually there is a process. Verbal,written and the final (verbal warning) I received no warnings, no papers to sign and no one ha d spoke with me about my abscences. Add terms I told her that it would be illegal to fire me with out proper paper work her tune changed towards me. Said tht this would be my final waning, made me fill out a paper this time, and proceeded to tell me that if the conversation left the office there would be reprocussions. This is work place bullying. I need some advice. I work at a warehouse in Jacksonville fl. What steps should I take?

    • Summer:
      Under employment at will it is not illegal to fire someone even absent paperwork. If you feel you are treated the way you are being treated because of some protected characteristic, such as race or disability then you can go to the local EEOC office and file a complaint. But performance issues and attendance issues not tied to those characteristics are certainly valid reasons for an employer to let someone go, even without notice.

    I just left a job of 3 years as an executive chef for a privately owned restaurant in ny. My salary was $1000 a week 60 hours. There were a few instances where my pay was cut cuz I was called off by the employer cuz she didn’t want to pay me. She micromanaged which is annoying, would come on the line and call people idiots, tell em to fuck off and they’re incompetent. We were not allowed lunch breaks. Expected to work 14 hr days when our hours were scheduled 10 and would tell us we’re not meeting expectations when responsibilities were continually increased. I have seen her make employees cry with belittling comments. Hourly people would be over 30 hours a pay period and not paid overtime. Told that “I can write you a new check, but let’s talk salary” and weeks go by and no ot pay. I walked out last week because I was sat down because I plan on moving after the season and being her executive chef she wanted to put her input in. I was basically told my fiancée is using me and I shouldn’t go and that if my fiancée truly loved me she wouldn’t feed me cupcakes. And that she can’t believe a woman of my size and stature (I’m a 6ft 300lb woman) goes to work and works as hard as I do to the point I can’t physically move, and actually gets up the next morning and does t again. I was aware I had a lot of responsibility as executive yet i was not given time or staff to properly execute our volume. It was effecting me mentally to where I almost admitted myself, being repeatedly told I was incompetent and just need to perform faster. I was getting physically ill due to exhaustion and was hospitalized because of it. I know I do my job very well and am capable of the tasks initially given, then was given almost impossible expectations. I have never been fired or had any issues at any jobs in my life. Now, to keep my physical and mental being healthy, I do not have a job. I didn’t know what else to do. I guess I just don’t know how to go about being compensated for pay deductions and what to do about the continuous verbal insults. I just slowly realized all the illegal and inhumane activities going on and I had to leave to protect myself. What do I do

  13. Hello! My name is Ryan & I have a question. I’ve been at my current job for about 3 months. I like my job and the work, but my employer is crazy. He runs two other companies along with the one I work at. His attitude and temper is nuts. I’m an assistant manager, and he makes me and all of my employees so nervous/on edge. During management meetings he screams at his employees, calling us “fucking idiots,” morons, asking why we’re so dumb, etc. I have a beard & keep it trimmed, and on one occassion he said I should shave down my beard because “I look like a terrorist.” Im on antidepressants, and I need this job, but he adds so much anxiety and stress, I don’t know what to do.

Hello, my name is Amy Sheehan and I just got fired from my job because I called at Co worker while I was at home and talked to her about the meeting she used and also about how the owner stayed he wanted to fire her and when he sta ed that it was in frontcof other employees and she was not there. I felt she had a right to know. I worked at this small restaurant for 11 months and dealt with being verbally abused, degraded, and belittled in front of other Co workers and customers. The owner did this to all of his employees. When I ask ny to my Co worker about the meting one of the subjects brought was no matter what they say to us we could not say anything back. Well I feel if I don’t like being abused I am going to ask for respect and for them not to talk to us that way. But we were told if we say anything back that we would be fired. So after talking to my Co worker about our feelings about the meeting and about the way we are treated she went back to work the next day and told the owner and his mother who no longer owns the place everything I said, so today I get phone call from the mother saying I was fired for talking about the meeting and about the Co worker getting fired, and expressing my feelings on not wanting to be treated badly at work. What can I do about this????

  15. Until yesterday I was working for a food plant. The owner and bosses yelled at me every time we talked. It has effected my work my homelike and now my stability. I need a income to live but my health was getting worse I less that a year I was no sleeping, not eating much and I lost alot of weight. I got to where I could not do my job due to his constant yellin and cussing me. He yells at me about other employees not doing their job. I leave work go to bed and cry all night. I have leukemia and the stress has been causing me problems. I spoke to my dr about my problem she recommended me getting out. Yesterday afternoon he had me on conference with many witnesses to down grade me and yell. I’m a sile widow women and at my age it might take awhile to find work. My first day I was just happy I got away today I’ve been depressed on how I can support myself. Although it was mutual that I leave I don’t think I can get unemployment. I’m in no shape to go out to look for another job. I would like to see him for my salary and damages for a year. I have to get myself ready to work again. I want to several people at the plant get yelled at daily. We all have witnesses. What can I do?

    • Sharon:
      There are a couple of things you can do. Call the nearest office of OSHA. Or call your local American Bar Association and ask for referrals to attorneys that help employees sue their employers for abuse and discrimination. If nothing else watch your afternoon news and pay attention to the attorneys that help people recover wages or deal with accidents.

  17. I work in a warehouse and I’m being intimidated to quit. They took my position away, demoted me, changed my hours. The assistant Warehouse manager was yelling at me after I clicked out tonight. Told me if I didn’t like it I could go to the house and stay there. She is a bully but they have no reason to fire me so she is intimidating me. She has said three times ” she would go blow for blow with anybody in the warehouse out in the parking lot ” anybody that knows me knows I don’t keep my mouth shut, I’ve been to the warehouse manager and the owner and all I get is that’s how she learned to mange and we are working with her. I need the income or I would walk out. I don’t give in easily but she has pushed every button she can push. Is there anything I can do ?

  18. I work in a restaurant where my Boss is so mean n hateful. He downgrades us n cussed us. He tells me I’m fat I need to loss weight n that I slow n lazy! I have been that this place for 4yrs. I have worked my butt off. I have worked 50 to 70 hrs a wk just to help him out so he didn’t have to work. Every day it’s something else. It’s worse when he losses at the casino. Wat do I do?   19. Im a manager of a local resturaunt. My boss is a bully in too many ways to post , but this example has really effected my life traumatically. I had a customer physically threaten me , in choice words , he told me that if i touched his plate he would cut my hand off and shove it down my throat. And this is a very censored version. My boss apologised to customer and through messages ( she wouldnt speak with me about incident when it happened ) told me that first she didnt believe me .than later on told me that in my line of work i need to deal and brush off ” snappy ” customers. I called law inforcement and they said i could have him arrested but fearing further retaliation i did not have him arrested. My boss allows him to come in and i fear for my life. Do i have legal options ??

    I work at a place that is a freezer inside besides that its always wet… We have butchers and packers …however the supervisor that works there is very bery strict he over passes the limits. He pressures the butchers to cut in a fast paste so fast that there has been many accidents already. Some almost cut off their. Fingers.. The employees only have 15 minutes of break plus lunch …and thats it.
    He pressures everyone to the extreme, rehardles of how tired, or wet and dangerous it can be.
    The supervisor is rude over works everyone and if he doesnt like some one he makes their days miserable until they quit.
    The manager is aware because all the employees complained to the front office. But they say as long as production is out its ok…regardless of all the accidents and all the harrasment that he is doing.

I’ve been working for a “small” company (just short of 50 employees) for about 2 years now as an accounting administrative assistant Though it is more administrative as I have not been given any accounting duties besides filing. The president is a very self centered man and lately has been doing some singling out on his employees as a “friendly joke.” He likes to run his company with his employees fearing him instead of respect. I have been doing what I have thought fairly well; little to no mistakes, and if I did make one, I owe up to it and learn from it. Even at the last Christmas Party, my husband told me how everyone he talked to appreciated all the work I do to help the company.
    Yesterday, I admitted to a mistake that I have made recently about not sending Outlook invites to Board members early in December for a meeting near the end of January; because in honesty, I thought I had already done so. I apologize and went to fix my mistake thinking that since there are still two weeks, I can still fix it and apologize and answer any questions that might come up. A couple hours later, I was told due to my “dropping the ball” on things lately, I will be moved to a different department that I have previously held out with. Besides the Outlook incident, I do not know how I have failed so much to where the president decided I was not fit for the job. My supervisor tried to soften the blue saying she understands I have been tied lately from staying up late due to going back to school for my degree and encouraged me to keep it up, but the move still is a huge hit. I’m guessing there is not much to do, but would like to verify.
    I have been looking for a another job lately that is more in line with the field I want to be in. I also have been debating on another issue with a co-worker for GAAP regulations on the company. We are certain there are violations going on from what we have noticed in our daily accounting duties, but we want to verify first. Do you know of a site where we can do this and report if we are certain?

I have worked for a butcher shop for 2 years now as a sous chef in the prepared foods section of the business, I asked can I cross train and become a butcher and was told by the owner that the men are the face of his business and no. I was told I had to learn everything in the kitchen so when the head chef retires I will be taking her position, I trained for 18 months learning everything inside and out just to have that position giving to a non qualified male. I asked about it and my boss tells me “you don’t want to talk at me because I’m not my sweet self these days”. It scared me and I waited until the next working day to talk to him about the situation and he fired me when I asked him how can we move forward to make it a better work place. Does this qualify for unjust firing?

  23. I work at a retail store for almost four years. I stayed longer at work to help a co-worker with a task. One of the managers came up to me and with an attitude disrespected me in front of my co-workers with a loud voice telling me to go home. I had a problem at work which my parents own the business , I’m a baker donut cutter and my parents own a franchise donut shop anyway I’m always at work on time I do job at times there’s no breaks ,I start at 2am until 12 noon that’s 10 ten hrs on my feet every day that I work,well one morning I showed up for work on time and happens so my other co worker shows up a little late ( which we are both donut cutters and also my brother on top of that ) I had already prepared my dough for cutting b/c I wasn’t for sure he was going to show up for work b/c there’s been several times he didn’t show up for work are he got angry about something and walked out anyway my employers allow him to do as he pleases ,well when he showed up for work he asked me who was cutting the donuts that morning and I told him that I was b/c he told me before he didn’t anybody making his doughs so I figure I would cut since I got there on time and I wasn’t for sure if he was going to be and I had already set my doughs , after he asked who was cutting , I said “I was cutting”. Well turn like he was walking and stoped and turned back to look at me and told to take this donut shop and shove it up my (bad word) and I said “what”? Anyway he went to wake my elderly parents at 2am in the morning and I asked him why did you go crying to mom and dad? Which I didn’t make any since out of the blue for him to have an out burst of anger,well started cursing me calling a old b word and he knows I was molested and raped as a child so he started groping himself telling to do things to him like dad made me to him and the friend of His also raped me on several occasions when I was a young child during that time to (which he is not my real dad by the way ) . Well my coworker/brother continued to assault me with his words and making jesters not only groping himself but also grabbing his buttocks telling me to bend over to let him do me the my stepfathers friend did in raping me , that wasn’t all he continued cursing me out b/c I’m one of Jehovah’s witness’s he started cursing Jehovah God out and shooting his finger in the air and telling God to do the same thing to him what was done as a child and again he walked toward me and called a fat old b to face so close that I could his breath in my face, l called the police he got citation and my employer which is my mom also paid it for him,so therefore got away with it he still has a job and he is able to abuse the other employees around there and nothing gets done about it,also my employer/ stepfather abuses the employees mentally at times he has come in the shop and yelled at his workers he’s not capable running the business he messes with people’s schedules and so fourth , he doesn’t want to let me work for on thing he said he doesn’t like Jehovah’s witness’s and also he don’t like female donut cutters and he hates me b/c of our pass issues when I was a child ,look I got punished for doing my job and showing up in Time for work and being responsible at my work ,also on top of that when I came back to work at Billy’s donuts the place was filthy I did extra cleaning etc.. and there was no appreciation at all felt used and abused mentally , should something like this continue the work place ? What can be done about it ? I’m no longer working there b/c they are discriminating against my faith and b/c of me being a female and that I reported on a coworker who harassed and verbally abused me , they no longer let me work b/c of this and that’s really sad, I just don’t want the same thing continue to happen to these employees it’s not fare what could be done?

  25. Wondering if you could give me some advice. This is quite a long story so I will try and keep it short and simple. My husband works for a large non-profit health care organization, they span across 4 different states. He is in a leadership position in the clinical lab but not a manager. He has worked here for about 2.5 years but has been in his current position and with his current manager for 9 months. Over the last 6 months she began to show her true colors. She is constantly bullying him, putting him down in front of others, yelling, screaming, and threatened him with physical violence. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and she has also talked badly about his military service in an effort to degrade him. He has caught her saying awful things about Native Americans and has also denied benefits to people with legitimate physical issues. She treats the majority of her staff poor but she has taken a special disliking to my husband. My husband filed an EEOC complaint and took everything to the HR department. They stated they would launch an “investigation”. Well HR never followed up with any of the witnesses names he provided, they tried to state my husband was blowing this out of proportion, and they just told us that they couldn’t find anything that backed up his claims and he could not bring any more complaints to them on this matter. We are at a loss of what to do. His manager continues to bully him and degrade him in front of others. This has caused extreme emotional distress for all of us. He has been looking for another job for sometime but no luck yet.

    • One option is to find an attorney who helps in discrimination cases. Did he actually file a compliant with the EEOC? If so they should follow up on that. If not he needs to make sure he files with them. Keep looking for that job, doesn’t sound like he will have a successful career at this company.

  26. I have just put my 2 week notice in with my supervisor at our office where i am an office manager. My direct supervisor is a bully and it is starting to wear on my physical and emotional health. I understand being a bully is not against the law however, i still have 32 hours that she is refusing to pay me for when i worked at our local fair to promote our business and im unsure of how to handle this. The other 2 employees that worked the fair with me DID get paid. There are several nights i had to stay overtime as we still had clients in the office – my supervisor refuses to pay any overtime because “we are in the black and can’t afford it”. Instead of a monthly fight i stopped adding my overtime hours to my time card because she would refuse to sign off on my hours. These are just a couple instances i have ongoing with this company, on top of the daily harassment, often times sending me home in tears. She tells me daily what a horrible mother she thinks i am, she goes to my boyfriend who is also a supervisor within the company and complains to him about my work, i just cant take it anymore! When i first started my job with this company i had a male supervisor who ordered me to give him a urine analysis on site at the workplace while he watched or i would be fired. In fear of losing my job i did what i was told, and he stood at the open doorway while he watched me pee. I have so many other things that have happened i dont know what to do or where to turn. Do i just leave and cut my losses? Can i turn this in so it doesn’t happen to anyone else? Im spiraling into a hole i can see no light out of! Help!

  27. This morning I was a foreman for a decent sized mechanical contracting company. I got fired at lunch time, due to a text message conversation my supervisor decided to have with me on my personal phone on my personal time (this past Saturday afternoon). He informed me that myself and my men would have to travel 1.5 hours every to and from the job site and that we were to be working 10 and 12 hour days, because the job was lagging behind. I simply told my supervisor that we would not be in this position of rushing to get the job done,and burning my workers out, if the boss man would have just been hiring decent plumbers for the past two years of this job site rather than going through a temp agency where I have not gotten a single usable man. He went as far as to tell them to “not let me in their head” is this grounds for some kind of civil/criminal case?

  32. Hi, I work at a fast food restaurant. I’ve only been there since the middle of april. When I first started there I was tossed to the side and barely trained so the day I got left on cashier and asked a question because it was a sandwich we made upon request but there’s so button so I asked my boss how do I ring it up. He says in front of me and the customers ” I’m not here to babysit you”. Then I was trained 1 day on fries and a week later after being trained I just get thrown on there and the other boss asked my co worker hey did you put this in the dryer. I stepped up and said no it was me I said why she said snapped off hopefully cause she knows how to do it right. I’ll be waiting for the next order to come to my window and her and other people will be talking and she will say find something to do while others get to stand around and talk. They pull things out of the fryers up to 30 seconds early. If the meat slips outta your hands and into the floor or trash they want you to wash it off and sometimes they reheat it and serve it again.. One time my boss decided to put me on fryer again I made my first batch of fries that day and filled the boxes they were only up 3 mins and my boss told me to make a new batch cause those we’re not fresh enough and the boxes we’re not over flowing , so instead of taking the tongs and filling it more he wanted me to make more. I’ll have them sitting on the side and he will dump them back into the fry station and then get mad at me because the fries are not boxed up. And say if you want more hours I need to see you can do your job. Before they open they will have the other employees help them dictate where someone’s gonna be that day. A few of my co workers a rude I’ll be working the fry station and they will ask another employee to make something for them that they need on back line. They won’t call me by name they will just say hey go do this and did you hear me. The other day I walked in with my 2 year old son to get my half off meal and my husband works there to so he should of gotten his half off too, she yelled at me in front of all the customers and said no I’m only getting my sandwich half off since my husband wasn’t with me his is full price. But yet when the assistant manger orders food for her son and her mom she gets her meal for free. I’ll hear other employees talking about me behind my back saying she doesn’t love herself she didn’t do her nails or she’s ugly without her make up, we’ll when your can is broke and you gotta walk to work , I don’t feel like makeup running down my face. Is there anything I can do to make my job less stressful?

    Some employees were ok talking about what they knew or heard.
    The problem is when the manager came back from vacation he must of gotten some info about the interviews.

I’m working for a company who disregards safety. i voice my concern so I’m called confrontational while being threatened with being fired if I don’t just shut my mouth and do these things and the state I live in doesn’t have much to offer concerning jobs. So my employer has given not one but two raises to the other all employees except me. Would this be consider harassment and discrimination? She has no reason to do this and one of my co workers told me she had it in for me and I hadn’t done anything wrong. Can I file an OSHA compliant and if I do what would be the consequences of this action? I think she is trying to get me to quit my job. I work for a small home health company I have been there for 6years it is Medicare certified for a long time there was only 3 RNs and 1 LPN he held the agency together now a new supervisor is hired and she came from another agency that closed and brought a crew of her nurses with her . She accused me of not writing a doctors order and said she had to put it in and lied about it when I put it in at 0930 in morning. The office staff is in chaos and alot of mistakes are made in administration with our pay. I got cranky with the scheduler but then apologized right after. I was recently written up for not pinching in and out on their new time system that doesn’t work because it has bugs in the system . I also got written up for being cranky with the scheduler . The supervisor wrote a false statement in my write up and it was inaccurate they intimidating me to sign it now the supervisor admitted it was infuriate because she wasn’t there . The new nurses are taking all the long time nurses hours does seniority count anymore? Help

  37. Hi there I worked at a local liquor store here in Odessa Texas. My manager is real favorable to her mom. The other employee. The mom had come at me once before like she was going to attack me.     My boss had always been kind up until about 6 weeks ago
    I had a employee who came in very sick. I told him that he should’nt be at work and he decided to go home.
    She called me into her office and asked me if I had sent him home and I told her no, that he needed to make that decision. She tells me that I don’t have the authority to send anyone home for any reason. I again told her that I didn’t send him home. She called me into her office a few days later and asked about a project that I was working on.
    I tried to explain that I was waiting for her approval on the quotes and she became angry and tells me “We are not equal” I wasn’t for sure what she was saying that for but did say that I understand that she is my boss and asked her not to be disrespectful to me.
    She then calls me into her office and tells me that she is demoting me and to not worry about the techs. Then she starts talking about tenants at the complex, like she is a crazy person or I wish we could get rid of him or her because they are just crazies.
    Things got so bad that I finally put a 30 day notice in.
    She again starts talking about a contractor that is a friend of mine. She states to several people in the office that he is just an idiot and a worthless excuse for a man.
    I can’t even talk to her anymore because she cuts me off before I can say anything.
    I’ve gone to her boss but now she won’t talk to me either. HR won’t do anything either. Is is very disrespectful to me.

  41. I have been with this company for almost 2 years as a medical assistant.
    First, our “COO” began dating a medical assistant within the company 6 months after I started. Since then, this once “medical assistant” all of a sudden drives a Porsche, is now a supervisor and is rarely at work.
    Second.. Our COO called me into her office over rumours she said she heard. Saying I said that “the only way you could get anywhere in this office was if you were a lesbian” as soon as I heard that statement I immediately knew who started this rumor but I stayed quiet because after trying to defend myself once it was already shot down with the comment ” dont lie, we know you said it” when i really didnt. At that time i became quiet because i knew they wouldnt believe anything i said and because i was being threatened and belittled by not only the COO and her girlfriend but also by their bestfriend who is also a supervisor. As the meeting ended she said ” I better not hear that you’re saying anything like that again” i agreed and left knowing thats all i could do.
    Since that meeting the COO tries to intimidate me by walking up really close to me for no reason at all and not saying a word to me. Just yesterday she tried saying i got a attitude with her because i said my patient rooms were too hot because she was trying to turn on the heater. She literally yelled at me in front of my patients saying ” dont give me anymore lip or im sending you home”
    They never give anyone within our medical office yearly reviews and they fire people on the spot if they think you’ve said something about their relationship before investigating to see if rumors are true.
    There’s no one higher up to go to about these issues. I just need some guidance.

They do everything right and he threatens their job if they do one little mistake even thought we are all human we all make mistakes! and thats not all he makes them record the residents if and take pictures of incidents and licence tags which i heard it was illegal because their not cops but this 80yr old man expects them to act? and he sexually harasses all the woman that work in the office! he has no respect for his staff nor the residents! my brother and husband record every conversation with him even when he is being threatening so we have records of him saying some awful things…and also when he gets in trouble with the cops for being crazy he refuses to let them in causing the police to threaten my brother and husband for them to arrest if they arent let in! how can we take care of this without the result of termination. and quick note they dont have HR they have a board but they never listen to residents nor staff ..and this man has been sued by his residents multiple times but he pays because he has millions… someone please tell me how to go about this..

I went to HR to file a complaint and expressed to her how I did not want the main boss to be involved because he has expressed his dislike for me and is friends with my verbal attacker. Recently HD promoted an individual to ASM and placed him on 3rd shift This was a total surprise to everyone who has worked with him at his previous store. He is not new to retail having been previously employed by Wal-Mart and Lowe’s. As a team we have gone to management and reported extreme safety issues, abusive behavior directed at specific associates. He has an uncontrollable temper to the point I have taken self-defense classes. However, I do not feel that I am the one that should be giving up my job and position. The usual thing that happens is that it is now a he/she said-he said situation with the company always siding with management and being told we misunderstand his intentions. His attitude is that we just do not like him. Store management is aware of his behavior, but it is out of sight out of mind as they do not work with him. What can we, as a group do regarding such an individual. Most of us have 5, 10, 20 years with the company and are looking for new employment because of one individual. Associates do not want to leave, but we are also not there to be abused either.

The first being I entered into a relationship with a co worker 4 months prior to being terminated. No complaints of us interacting at work we understood we had a job to do. This has been over the course of 4 years working with him and despite no matter what was said I still showed to work the next day. I am 23 and 5’4 never been to jail and I have had my own meeting with him discussing I do not appreciate being called short or anything or the sort. Especially whenever I care ab litt the company. He disagrees that he meant any of it to hurt me but there has been times he beats me down so much mentally that I feel like I cant fo anything. I’m just wondering what type of legal action I can take against the company if any. For discrimination harassment and possibly even sexual harassment. Workers there have made gestures towards me I do not appreciate but they haven’t really beat me down as much as the owner. I dont believe anything he has done could be considered “right”

  51. I was a shift runner for the dominos i work at but would also be a delivery driver. At the beginning of my shift on Fridays I would clock in as a shift runner and halfway through the day I would clock out and clock bacl in as a driver.. that assigned me two banks of $15/each. When I clocked out at the end of the night when they were counting my money I was short on what I was supposed to take home, according to my calculation. My general manager then took a closer look at what the computer showed. He then told me that it was bc I clocked in under two different positions, so it assigned me two banks although I only received one. So they owed me $15. I asked him what about the 3 previous weeks where I had done the same thing and didn’t notice. They should have to compensate me $45 for the three $15 banks I was assigned but never received. His exact words to me were “you snooze, you lose”
    After hearing all the things he was saying about me and how I was being treated with an attitude I decided to demote back to just being a driver. The manager that took my place who came from another store is now being extremely rude to me all the time, and asking me to do a bunch of extra tasks that she doesn’t ask anyone to ever do. I went above my general managers head to get reimbursed for the money he didn’t want to pay me. His attitude towards me then got worse. I went to him about the way that I was being treated by the manager who and how she was treating me.. he said he would talk to her about it. He never did. I was also told today by my general manager that he is sure that pizza hut is hiring if I didn’t like it.. I’m not sure which laws or if any are being broken here.. I’ve went about his head again today after being sent home after only being at work for an hour, and the area supervisor said he will sit down and talk with both of us bc in the year and a half that I’ve worked there, there has neber been an issue involving me and I have always gotten along with everybody I work with. I’m afraid that I’m going to be treated even worse or have my hours cut after this meeting on Thursday

  52. I have been denied training that has been bought and paid for by my company for the former supervisors in my role. The manager has made the comment I won’t give him this training because he wants to use it to leave. No explanation can be given for not allowing this training. It was put in my evaluation as something that would be provided for me in 2017/18. I have brought this up numerous times in emails and in meetings. I have been told a meeting will be setup to discuss your training later. I have been told training is strategic and needs to be thought out. I was told in person that the City does not support your training. I asked a former employee how he received this training “ I called Boss was told to pick a date book it and get account number to charge it to. We are 11 months in and Boss is denying something that was put in my evaluation that would be provided. Boss is stunting my development on purpose and keeping me stagnant. I feel this is discrimination or harassment. I’m in my 40s and former employee was late 20s who received it within 5 minutes. I have been to upper management with this. Was told bring it up in your eval. Was told the Boss would get a talking at appropriate time. 2 months later still no talking. I filed a formal complaint now so they are looking into it. Problem is the investigation will be by the person or persons who never looked into it when I brought it up 2 months ago. Very frustrated any help or advice. Thanks

  53. I have worked for an abusive boss for 24 years and counting. There are to many things to mention but I can say it has affected my married my daily life and my well being. I only hope that other people in my situation can adjust in their conditions and faith to get through the abuse. It is not only me but other co workers have been abused as well. Small business owners whom have been given good opportunities step on as many people the can to get to their goals . It’s a real shame these situations exist in the business world ..

  54. I work as a Manager for a grocery store. My boss doesn’t like my husband. I’ve asked him on several occasions what my husband has ever done to him and get told that he’s done nothing, he just thinks he’s a bad person because of things he’s heard. He has banned my husband from all of his properties (half the town) and spreads rumors about him to everyone in town. He has friends on the police force and my husband has been pulled over and searched 10 times this month. He told me that me and my kids could move into an apartment right above his main office but not my husband (we were evicted). When I refused, he began being horrible to me. I didn’t have a way to work so I had to call in one day. I was wrote up and demoted. Now, I have to sit back and keep my mouth closed while the employees I manage talk bad about me and make fun of me. He tells them all of my business, both professional and personal. He cut my pay from salaried down to hourly without telling me. My next paycheck will be a quarter of what I made. I feel as if he wanted me to leave my husband and since I won’t, he’s retaliating. He constantly makes things up, even when I have physical evidence stating it’s not true, I have been drug tested twice when no one else has. Do I have a claim here or do I just need to take it and keep my mouth closed?

  55. My husband works for a horrible boss. Daily, he gets emails threatening his job, multiple phone calls a day being screamed at and cussed at. He gets blamed for things being ordered wrong, when ordering is not his job and he doesn’t have the power to order. They want him to cut corners so they can make their numbers. He is also very good at his job so they have piled on more than double the work load that other employees have that have been with the company longer and have the same job title as him. When he points this out his boss says he’s good at what he does so they expect him to pick up the slack for everyone else. They actually had a sit down meeting about it. My husband has never had any anxiety issues in his life but Because of this boss he has developed panic attacks, anxiety and high blood pressure which he now needs medication for. Is there anything we can do because his health is being negatively effected because of how his boss treats him.

  56. I was unaware that I was supposed to work. I work in an assisted living facility. When I called my boss to inform her I had no idea i was supposed to be there and had been drinking she told me ” I had to go to work intoxicated or not otherwise I would be fired.” Ibcalled my CEO and he obviously told me not to go. But she cant threaten me like that right?

  57. I worked for a retail corporation company. I was an assistant manager. My general manager on many occasion made it clear to me that she can get away with anything as she has a sexual relationship with the district manager. She realized how great I worked so she was leaving all the heavy lifting work for me and just hung around all day playing on her phone receiving inappropriate texts from multiple people including our district manager. I was fed up one day and I contacted the DM and told him she wasn’t doing her job and that certain things weren’t being done on her shift. I got ahold of him before my shift for the day began. When I came in for my shift she was very irritated because he told her to do the work. She asked me to help her in the cooler. I told her yes but that I needed to get my sweater. As I got my sweater and started to walk in the cooler she received a text from the DM and freaked out on me asking me if I told him she wasn’t doing her job. And proceeded to rip product out of my hand push me out of the cooler and chest butted me raising her hand in a threatening manner. I felt confused and shocked and not safe. I walked away from her went on register for a few minutes and broke down in fear and shock of what just happened. So I punched out and left. I talked to the DM and he did not care. He wanted me to go back and work things out with her. When he’s the reason why this all escalated. I told him I felt unsafe being around her he refused to transfer me so I asked for HRs number. It took him hours to get me the number. I’ve worked for other corporations I know how it works get ahold of HR first before the employee and tell them the claims are false. I’ve been there. Well by the time I had gotten ahold of HR they first thing off the jump tell me that even if she assaulted me that she was not getting reprimanded but they would investigate it anyways. I told them I asked for a transfer. By that point I realized my safety or concerns were disregarded. I received a call a few days later that I was approved a transfer but by that point I decided to resign as my safety was not a concern and I feared retaliation. I have been denied unemployment benefits. Is there anything I can do? My husband also worked for the company and due to my lack of employment we lost our car and getting to work was hard. He couldn’t show up anymore. The following week he noticed he received no pay so he got ahold of the district manager and demanded he got his pay since it wasn’t the first time they didn’t pay him in a timely manner. The dm said he would look into it but also told him to expect the police to come knocking on our door as security was doing an audit due to inventory shortage at the store he was at and questioned some purchases my husband made. My husband told the DM that he made all his purchases and had 3 ways of proving it. Police never showed and never received anything in the mail. Is that defamation? The general manager at that store is very close friends with the dm. And we have seen the GM leave with items not purchased and as my husband resigned the day before the investigation it was likethey used him as an escape goat.

  59. i was recently fired from my job i worked there for a whole year the boss that was incharge of me and training me costintly asked me if i rode the short buss and threatened me twice with physical harm to the point one day he went from six feet from me to less then a foot and said i was about to be laying on the ground I did get into a uproar and didnt touch him but retaliated with a threat back I know this was wrong but the whole time this guy was putting me down and threatening me for about 8 montha straight i asked if i could be moved and they said they couldnt when i was threatened i was sent home and the other guy never got into trouble and i recently found out the floor lead and my boss planned on firing me 5 months before they even did. is there something i can do, i do have witnesses I need help and some advise i feel like i was wronged.

  61. I just started working in a healthcare setting in NC as somewhat of an “assistant manager” in the company. However, I’m beginning to learn that the CEO is belittling, has seemingly sexually harassed other employees (and since fired them for standing up for themselves-but that’s heresay), and is verbally abusive (he said in our meeting that “you all suck.” I tried having a meeting with him to offer an outsiders perspective (since I’m still new – only worked there for about a month) and offer some ideas to build up morale and he literally laughed in my face and basically made me feel like my ideas didn’t matter and he didn’t value my opinion. That doesn’t bother me, what bothers me is that we don’t have an HR department so our only outlet is to go to the CEO (who is the abusive one I’m referencing here) or the MD’s who own the practice who don’t want to deal with things like this, so they will defer to the CEO who will then (and seemingly in the past) “handle” it himself (aka fire/reprimand whomever complained). Basically, I’m concerned that this is a cycle and we will not have any recourse. Who can I report something like this to? Also, I’m concerned that our practice is violating HIPAA and OSHA training laws as well but nobody wants to listen to me…HELP.

  62. I have a Question; So I witnessed my buddy get assaulted by the supervisor/Formen of the project he did not retaliate. We actually went down to the office and they removed us from that project but I feel that they did not handle the situation correctly being that they did not send the foreman home not suspended him. Seems like the GM is trying to keep the situation a secret because they called me being suspicious wanton to know who else knew about the incident ? What should we do I???

My girlfriend was freshly hired and working for a fast food place went through the training process in two days and on her second day of work a member of corporate visited called her stupid in front of others and said he has no idea as to why she was recommend to work there because she was a great worker. And told her she was being let go. She has a history with depression and a slight learning disability so to break somebody down on on their second day of work that to me needs to be taken care of. Can that member of corporate be fired?

  64. What about when you’ve been in 2 stores, SAME MARKET HR, and bullied for following policies. You report it and are told the bully meant no harm. Now a manager threatens to kill you and two witnesses say they heard it and don’t know why she said it toward me. That she just yelled I’ll kill you. No not really. Don’t turn me in. Now I’m being denied to see camera footage and the Store Manager is saying someone else was there nobody seen and she was playing around toward the person nobody seen. I’ve reported the Store Manager before and this ASM so they clearly have been retaliating and Market HR keeps letting it slide. This ASM said she’d kill me. This is unnerving. Help.

  65. I had a situation in wich I was sent to a frac site other than my own to assist the crew there. We had a rotation unloading trucks going on all night where i and two others would unload four trucks then swap out if rotation. There was another guy who was inside of a trailer running a automated sand dispensing unit and he asked me to take over , i said ” sure , but my four trucks are coming up so youll have to take my spot” he responded by saying ” F that those two can rotate” and he threw a radio into my personal vehicles dash and stormed away. I followed and told him that the supervisor wants us to rotate since its 17 degrees outside . He responded “suck my c*>k youre running the stage ” i let him know hey man its unfair to them heres the radio im going to go do my trucks . As i walked away the radio flew inches away from the back of my head , and he sped off of the location and didnt return for about an hour . One of the guys that was with us was about 6 feet away and witnessed the whole thing he was even amazed that the radio didnt hit me . I alerted my sypervisor and the guy above him when i recieved a call from a female supervisor asking me why i was fighting with him. I explained everything to her and her words were ” let me talk to him before you call anyone ok” that was what prompted me to alert my direct super and his super . Fast foward to the next morning i recieve a text from one of the supers i alerted asking me why i had been sitting in my truck all night and why i hadnt picked up any sand. Both of which were lies (later found to be made by the female super ) . Three days have past and the guy wasnt written up not even reprimanded. What can/should i do

  66. So I am already on intermittent fmla so using a wheelchair/crutches. I come into work on crutches, clock in, then get company wheelchair.
    Clocking I fell over equipment left in door way. My assistant manager had a melt down in front of everyone upon learning I was making a report. I have co workers recorded(legal in my state) commenting on how his behaviour was unnecessary. I’m afraid to seek medical TX for the fall bc of the way he acted. I prefer to go right to lawyer instead of management. Because damage to my emotional state has been done, I dont want to deal with more negativity towards me. I’m already dealing with it over FMLA.

  67. I’ve been working for this company for almost 2 years. i have no issue with the company but only with my senior. She has been nitpicking all my work. Either I missed a period on a sentence or didn’t use her methods on how she does things. She supposed to give me my own properties to work with. however, she hasn’t because she says that I am still making mistakes. that means she has full control all the commission being made. She has been verbally abusive. when i make a minor mistake like ask her for something, she will make a comment like using your common sense, your brain. I don’t know what you’re thinking. She does it in a loud aggressive voice. She’s been like that to everyone. if someone from the properties we work with makes a mistake. she will make a comment about them being stupid, not using their brains, how did that person got hired. that person should be fired. She is close to one of the owners so no has filed a complaint against her. what should i do? i like working for this company however, i can’t stand working with her. please advise.

  68. I work at a family owned dealership where the owner is a micro-manager/bully, and there’s constant bickering among the family members. The owner is the dad, the GM is his Step Son-in-Law. The Bookkeeper is his Step-Daughter who’s married to the GM. The Step-son is the Warehouse Manager. The mom is behind the scenes but is part owner and is somewhat of a puppet-master. There is always foul and vulgar language used among them when they’re arguing. Sometimes the bickering is done in front of customers. In addition to this toxic environment, the siblings want to be in charge and give out orders to the other employees, often bypassing the GM and the owner. Then the owner gets furious because he wants to call ALL the shots and be in control. —-Help!!! Are there any labor laws that can protect the other employees who are caught up in all this chaos , and who are just trying to do a good job?

  69. My son is a minor work for a restaurant and the owner is constantly yelling and cussing at his employees. He has made it a hostile environment to work at. Every day my son my son tells me that his boss called him names and yells at him. My son is a very hard worker but this is his first real job and we’re not sure what steps to take. He doesn’t want to quit because he needs the job but he don’t deserve to be treated like that.

  70. I quit a job in June due to my manager.
    He seemed to be bi polar or have some sort of mental disorder. One day he would love his employees and he would brag on everything we did, talk about customers bragging about me, tell me I was his best worker, then he would tell everyone else that I am lazy, didn’t do my job, he did this to everyone. I had a day off (which was rare ) and he called me and asked if I could come in at 1 and I said I couldn’t make it at exactly one but if he still wanted me to I would be there around 2 and he agreed, later I learned that he was screaming at his girlfriend on the phone in the back office because he was so angry that I didn’t come straight away. He had his girlfriend messaging me asking me on Facebook, which was how he always did it. The customers heard him saying he couldn’t depend on me for anything. But when I got there he left as soon as o arrived. Then the next week he cut my hours from 44+ to 33 hours.Then he started slowly not showing up for work and me and the assistant manager had to pick up his slack and were getting up to and over 51 hours a week, my assistant manager had to get around 60 a week because finally he just stopped coming, then it was up to me and her to keep our store running, which was not pretty, none of us had been properly trained. We worked for 3 weeks without 1 day off. Skip to why I quit, i had to leave work to go to the ER, I thought I had a kidney stone and was in extreme pain and was vomiting, I called him and he said he would come cover the last 45 minutes of my shift, because I was the night manager so he only had to close the store for me. The next day he messages me and tells me not to come back til I get a medical release from my doctor and that our district manager had said so, and that I couldn’t come back to work until I got it and he took me completely off of the schedule. I called Human resources and they said no, this was notokay, they called him and made him back on the schedule but I was afraid to go back to work after that because of what he might do now that he knew i actually called in on him. Is there anything that can be done? This man curses his employees out in front of their customers, hes made some cry, he made me start adding coupons on people didn’t even have, he said they needed no proof they actually had the coupon because each customer can have one hundred dollars each in adjustments. He was extremely rude and I’ve seen him be inappropriate with customers in the way he talks to them, he made a few women very uncomfortable and they complained to their friends around them about how he was rude and how someone needs to do something a out him. But now I’m stuck without my job and struggling because I was so worried about what he would do this time.

Question: I work at a fortune 100 company and my boss stated ‘Dean will commit suicide and I’ll burn the building down if this project isn’t finished…Janice will have to dig through the charred remains to find your charred bodies” – I reported this comment to HR but they are ‘looking into it’. Does this seem like a workplace threat of violence? It does to me and makes me feel unsafe. Thoughts?

  72. What agency can you file a report with concerning a local company, which the General Manager smokes marijuana on a daily bases? (The owner of the company will not reply back to this issue).
