I am probably the last person to comment on the action of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer who has eliminated teleworking at Yahoo. She was hired to whip Yahoo in shape but I think she is making a mistake by using telework as the scapegoat for poor management.
Teleworking works
I have seen the benefits of teleworking. I watch it every day. I wrote about in a post entitled Do You Think Telecommuting Can’t Produce Great Work? But as I wrote in that post to make it work you have to have the right people managed by the right managers. That has apparently been one of the symptoms of Yahoo’s problems. So Mayer is whipping everyone into shape and now everyone has to show up to work in order to promote “productivity, efficiency and fun”, according to head of HR Jackie Reses. Mayer and Reses appear to be the types that don’t trust that people can be productive and efficient at home. Perhaps they themselves can’t be. But obviously due to poor management of telework Yahoo has had that experience. That however is not the fault of telework, it is the fault of management.
I am not the only one that thinks Yahoo is making a mistake. Jody Thompson and Cali Ressler, the authors of Why Managing Sucks and How to Fix it: A Results-Only Guide to Taking Control of Work, Not People said “Mayer has taken a giant leap backward. Instead of keeping great talent, she is going to find herself with a workplace full of people who are good at showing up and putting in time vs. a workforce that could most effectively and efficiently drive the business forward in the 21st century,” according to Elizabeth Weise and Jon Swartz of USA TODAY.
Collect everyone to evaluate everyone
It appears to get a handle on the company Yahoo is going through a weeding out process, which will be made easier if everyone is underfoot. Part of the weeding out process will be teleworkers who voluntarily leave because what they found attractive about working for Yahoo will now be gone. There will be a talent drain that hopefully the company will be able to survive.
Hmmm… perhaps I need to reconsider my Yahoo email addresses.

      This is an excellent piece from China Gorman. And I agree with her. However, the point that I was making is that telework is not the problem. Mismangement of the telework process, and other things, is what got Yahoo in trouble. I understand that things need to change at Yahoo, I just think it could have been done without elminating telework and potentially losing all the good employees involved with it.
