HR News for the New Year

I hope everyone has moved into the New Year of 2011 in good shape. And if you have not, then this is the year to work hard to improve your condition. There is no shortage of self-help, self-improvement articles about so I am not going to add to that list. In case you have not noticed, we are at a different site now. This is part of Omega HR Solutions’ self-improvement plan. We are excited about our changes and you will see more as we go along.
As we start of the new year there are some prominent HR topics that have made the headlines. Three in particular caught my eye, so I thought I would pass them on to you.
 First up is union activity. If you have not been paying attention to the activities of the National Labor Relations Board then you may be in for a rude awakening one day in the near future. As reported in “… the NLRB stated that it would require companies to publicly alert their employees of their right to unionize under Federal law, requiring postings on bulletin boards, and sometimes even calling for emails to be sent to all staff members.” Yes, you read that right, you will be required to inform your employees of their rights to unionize. But there is no mention of letting your employees know they have the right to reject a union as well. Not exactly balanced.
The second piece of new dealt with the seemingly improving economy. One sign is that in December of 2010 there were fewer first time unemployment claims. As reported in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Conference Board economist Kenneth Goldstein says “We’re starting to see a pickup in job growth. We may even get to a point, conceivably by spring, where the consumer is going to say that it no longer feels like we’re still in a recession.” He expects the economy to generate 100,000 to 150,000 jobs a month by spring, up from an average 86,500 a month in 2010. I hope he is correct, though I am somewhat skeptical of the unemployment numbers. I wonder how much of this reduction in an artifact of the holiday season. Despite this optimism, the improvement won’t be enormous. The unemployment rate is only expected to drop to 9.6% or so, but that is down from 9.8%.
The third HR item is related to sexual harassment. If you are old enough to remember the 1991 Tail Hook Scandal you probably just shook your head at the reports about Navy Captain Owen Honors and his raunchy sex oriented tape he made and showed while the executive officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise.  And you think the Navy would have been far more sensitive to this. However, despite the tape the officer was later made the captain of the aircraft carrier. Some organizations and some people never learn. I guess rank has its privileges, or at least thinks it should. This same behavior in the private sector would cost a company alot of money.
I spent my holiday like this.

    I like the new site, and wish you success in the new year.
    I once worked for a company that attempted an approach of “we won’t speak bad about the union and they won’t speak bad about us” during new organizing attempts. But, since the internal organizers weren’t union members, it was impossible for the union to manage “negative speak” on that end. So much for partnerships and giving employees fair and balanced information.
    I’m from a Navy family and I am watching that story. Even if they change direction, it will be hard because they don’t want to give the impression that public pressure (Facebook) caused the change. No winners here, period.
